Understanding the Charges on Your Bill This sample bill describes most of the charges that appear on customers’ bills. Your actual bill may be different from this example, because bill components vary by community.  - Your account number
- Total amount due
- Due date
- Amount to be paid
- Return address
- Your mailing address
- Address and account number where the water service is received
- Billing period
- Rate type
- Meter number and size
- Beginning and ending meter readings for the billing period
- Amount of water used during the billing period
- Total prior balance including surcharges and penalties
- Total water charges (explanation is on back of bill) and total gallons used multiplied by the current rate per gallon
- Total amount due
- Graph showing average gallons used per billing cycle
- Area for important messages
- Address and telephone number of the customer service center and emergency services
